Baroness Biography

Baroness (formed in 2003) is a progressive heavy metal band that is known for incorporating the intensity of punk metal and melodic flourishes of indie-rock, hailing from Savannah, Georgia, U.S. Prior to the earliest incarnation of Baroness, lead singer and guitarist John Baizley, guitarist Tim Loose, bassist Summer Welch, drummer Allen Blickle had all been members of the punk/metal band Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks. Following a move to Savannah, Georgia from Lexington the band began writing new material and performing live to new audiences. In 2004 the group released their debut EP “First”, which was produced by Phillip Cope of Kylesa, as was their subsequent EP “Second” released Hyperrealist Records in 2005. The record releases were well-received despite failing to significantly raise the profile of the band. That changed however in 2007 when Baroness released a split EP, “A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk”, with Savannah-based metal band Unpersons. As a result, Baroness signed with the revered independent label Relapse Records, who issued the band’s debut studio album, “Red Album” in September 2007. Earning widespread critical acclaim, once again produced by Phillip Cope of Kylesa, the record catapulted the band to national notoriety despite failing to make the charts. Two years later Baroness issued their sophomore full-length album “Blue Record”, which was similarly extolled by the musical press. Debuting atop the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, the album has been dubbed the 20th Greatest Metal Album of all time by LA Weekly. Led by the single “Takes My Bones Away”, Baroness’ third full-length, “Yellow & Green”, arrived in July 2012. Peaking at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 and No. 85 on the UK Albums Chart, the critically acclaimed record saw the band raise their international profile to new heights. Read more
