Hindi Zahra Biography

Hindi Zahra (born January 20, 1979) is a Moroccan-born French singer-songwriter and self-taught multi-instrumentalist, hailing from Khouribga, Morocco. Drawing her musical influences from Berber music, soul, jazz, blues and world music, Zahra’s vocals have been compared with the likes of Beth Gibbons and Manu Chao. Hindi Zahra, born Zahra Hindi, spent the first fifteen years of her life in Khouribga, Morocco before moving to Paris to be with her father. Whilst working in the Louvre, Zahra began penning her first songs and accompanying them with simple melodies, before in 2005, having enough material to compile a debut EP. Featuring the singles “Beautiful Tango”, “Oursoul”, “Try”, and “Stand-Up”, which would subsequently become popular singles for the singer, Zahra issued her debut, self-titled EP in 2009. Rooted in pop sensibilities however lending jazz rhythms, the passion of soul and the yearning of blues, the record led the singer to sign with the jazz label Blue Note Records later that year. In 2010 the Moroccan-born singer-songwriter issued her debut full-length album “Handmade”, which generated significant attention across parts of Europe. Charting in Belgium, France, Sweden, and Switzerland, the record earned a string of positive reviews and spawned the Belgian No. 59-charting single “Beautiful Tango”. The same year Zahra contributed vocals to French musician Blundetto’s debut album “Bad Bad Things”, following which the singer won the Prix Constantin for Best Album and the Victoires de la Musuque for best World music album for her LP "Handmade". To bridge the gap before a second full-length, Zahra issued the EP “Until the Next Journey” in 2011 and appeared in the films “The Narrow Frame of Midnight” and “The Cut” in 2014. The following year the self-taught multi-instrumentalist released her second studio album “Homeland”, which charted at No. 64 on the Belgian Albums Chart and No. 27 on the French. Read more
