Husky Biography

Formed in 2008, Husky are an Australian folk-rock band, hailing from Melbourne Australia, becoming the first Australian band to ever sign with indie mainstay, Sub Pop Records, in 2012. Growing up together, the two cousins, Husky Gawenda and Gideon Preiss developed a shared love of music, listening to artists and writing songs together during their adolescence. They eventually decided to form a band together, and in 2008, they enlisted the help of Evan Tweedle (bass, vocals), with Preiss taking up the responsibility of keyboards and vocals and Gawenda playing the guitar and vocals. Husky was then born, developing a sound that reflected their influences, taking songwriting inspiration from the likes of Leonard Cohen, The Doors and Neil Young. The band worked relentlessly on developing their sound and live performance, making music in a makeshift home recording studio, eventually recording the basic tracks which would make up their debut album. They sent these rough demos to producer Noah Georgsson, who had previously worked with the Strokes and Joanna Newsom, who carried out the final mixing process. This collection of songs would eventually surface as their debut album, “Forever So,” a haunting folk album, released on Liberation Music. In the same year, the band took part in Triple J Radio’s ‘Pushover’ talent competition, coming first place. This helped raise their profile and the band quickly gained many offers of support slots with ell-established artists such as Gotye, Devendra Barnhart and Noah and the Whale. They have since also supported The Shins, City & Color and the legendary Neil Young & Crazy Horse. They then signed a record deal with Sub Pop, who re-released their debut, “Forever So,” in 2012 n the US, becoming the first Australian band to sign with the label. Their second album was released in 2014, returning again to Liberation Music for the album’s release. Read more
