Ivy Queen, whose real name is Martha Ivelisse Pesante Rodriguez, is an American singer and songwriter of Puerto-Rican descent. She is famously known as the Queen of reggaeton.
Ivy Queen was born on 4 March 1972 in Anasco, Puerto Rico. She later moved with her parents to New York, USA for schooling before moving back to her home country. At 18 she moved again, to San Juan, which marked the start of her performing career. There she met DJ Negro, a record producer who helped her by setting her up with the band The Noise. The group played locally and garnered quite a lot of attention, leading to Ivy Queen going solo in 1996. A year late she was snapped up by Sony Discos and released her debut album ‘ En Mi Imperio’ which was soon followed by a second, following its relative success. Her second album spawned her first big hit, ‘In the Zone’.
However, it was not until she switched label companies that Ivy Queen gained some real fame. She rose to national fame with her next three albums: ‘Diva’, ‘Flashback’, and ‘Sentimiento’, which all went to either Gold or Platinum status. Her seventh studio album, which she called ‘Drama Queen’, was released in 2010 and spawned the top ten single ‘La Vida es Asi’. Singing a mix of genres, including reggaeton, hip hop and bachata, Ivy Queen is often referred to as the Queen of reggaeton.
