Orgy Biography

Combing catchy pop hooks with industrial odiousness is not unheard of, but their are few groups who are able to pull it off as seamlessly as Orgy. This LA based “Death Pop” act formed in 1994, a time where metal was searching for a sound outside the tired realm of thrash and electronic music was fidgeting its way from pop into something more intense. Members Jay Gordon (vocals), Amir Derakh (guitars), Ryan Shuck (guitars), Paige Haley (bass), and Bobby Hewitt (drums) met this change head on and developed a sound eclectic in scope, but all their own. Their unique style perhaps came form the line ups diverse background. Some of it’s members such as Derakh and Hewitt were involved in heavy metal bands (Derakh with Rough Cutt and Hewitt with Electric Love Hogs), while others developed their technical chops such as Gordon who was an accomplished producer as was Derakh. Their sound sparked quite a bit of interest and not long after their formation they were signed to Korn’s label Elementree Records. The group was quick to release their studio debut “Candyass” a title named after a drag queen with whom they were acquainted. The album produced two singles: their cover of New Order’s classic club cut “Blue Monday” and their hit original “Stitches”, which was accompanied by a music video . They toured throughout the year in support for this album, first appearing at Oklahoma’s festival EdgeFest, moving on to the Family Values Tour playing alongside Ice Cube, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Rammstein, and Incubus and embarking on solo stints with Love and Rockets and Sugar Ray. Their sophomore album “Vapor Transmission” made its way into the market on 10 October 2000. It stayed true to the band’s original sound, but placed a stronger emphasis on melody. Overall the album generated positive feedback with NME giving it a perfect score of 10 out of 10. This release went to no. 16 on the US Album charts and has successively been certified Gold. Though this album featured no major singles they did compose one later that year for the Zoolander soundtrack “Faces”. After these releases the members of Orgy took a break to focus on other projects. Shuck and Derakh started the electronic group Julien-K and Jay Gordon volunteered to work with Linkin Park, remixing their track “Points of Authority” and helping produce an album for Chester Bennington’s (lead singer of Linkin’ Park) side project, Death By Sunrise. The group returned to release their 3rd studio album “Punk Statik Paranoia” in 2004 through Gordon’s independent record label D1 music. This album introduced a nu-metal sound along the lines of Korn and spawned the two singles “Vague” and “Pure”. This was the last Orgy album to feature the “core lineup”. The band took a long break, but re-emerged in 2010 as a new project fronted by the only remaining original member Gordon. Orgy initiated a five week tour in 2012 and later debuted a demo of a new track entitled “Grime of the Century”. Read more
